My Journey to Starting a Cloud-Native Career using Cisco Technologies as a Portal
Just yesterday I dug deeper and found out that Cisco has a Cloud-Native SD-WAN solution for optimizing traffics for microservices apps managed using Kubernetes.
“Cloud Native” has been a buzzword I have found myself reading about in the last 2 weeks in my research to upskill and learn how to use Kubernetes for work stuff.
I realized that an organization called CNCF owns Kubernetes. That was when the buzzword “Cloud Native” started ringing in my ears. Lucky for me, I found out they also have certs to teach me how to use Kubernetes.
But me being a long term thinker who prefers working building a path and working backwards, I needed to design my learning path since CNCF offers a bunch of associate and professional certifications. I decided to reach out to one of the employees over Zoom. He was happy to guide me through what skill a Network Engineer like me had to take. He even made a Twitter Thread off our conversation, where he outlined some learning resources.
Then something interesting popped up the same day. Cisco was having a new Dev Net snack minute episode about what they are doing in the Cloud Native space. I was stoked! I didn’t even know Cisco had new products in that space. It felt good!

I’m really happy about these things springing up. I plan to build my cloud-native skill by leveraging Cisco technologies. Just 2 days ago, I passed my AWS Cloud practitioner cert, I have already been getting my feet dirty in the cloud space for the past 4 months.
Now, I’m working towards getting my CCNA. Which should happen soon.
My next goal after the CCNA is to properly understand how Microservices & Containers work by using these cert resources:
Now, I will not sit for the exam because it's vendor-neutral. After this, I am delving right into the Cisco Dev-Net. Noticing the trends going on around, software architecture is going fully loosely coupled rather than being monolithic. I also have the feeling that Cisco wants to begin to adopt this mindset into network implementation. As seen in the image below.
I’m super excited about all this, and I can’t wait to see what Cisco is building in this space. I will be watching more Cisco Live sessions to dig deeper.
I also recently passed my AWS Cloud Practitioner exam, big step!
Stay tuned for more updates.
